Turn your eyes upon Jesus

There is a classic Christian hymn written by Helen Howarth Lemmel whose chorus is thus

"Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of this earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace."

This beautiful hymn speaks of an action that is to be a believer’s daily experience; looking upon Jesus fully in His wonderful face. The result being that the things of this world grow dim in the light of His glory.

The Apostle John speaks of the blessed experience that he had of beholding Jesus Christ at the time when He dwelt among men in the flesh.

And the Word (Christ) became flesh (human, incarnate) and tabernacled (fixed His tent of flesh, lived a while) among us; and we [actually] saw His glory (His honor, His majesty), such glory as an only begotten son receives from his father, full of grace (favor, loving-kindness) and truth.

– John 1:14 (Amplified Bible, Classic edition)

Today, after Jesus Christ’s death, resurrection and ascension into heaven (Mark 16:19), we behold him in the Word and we are constantly transformed into His image. His glory becomes our reality and this world and all in it gives way to our true reality in Christ. Oh what a blessed experience!

And all of us, as with unveiled face, [because we] continued to behold [in the Word of God] as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are constantly being transfigured into His very own image in ever increasing splendor and from one degree of glory to another; [for this comes] from the Lord [Who is] the Spirit.
