Ingredients:

- Beef
- Onions
- Tomatoes
- Rice – basmati rice is the best type of rice for this recipe since it is not sticky
- Water – hot water is preferred
- Salt
- Spices* – Use your choice of ginger, black pepper, onion powder, pilau masala, coriander, etc.
* Fresh spices where possible are recommended for their richer flavor.
Step-by-step instructions:
- Cut the beef into your desired size of cubes. Slice the onions, tomatoes and fresh spices and set aside.
- In a saucepan, place a moderate amount of cooking oil and heat it on high.
- Once the oil heats up, add the beef, season with salt and fry the beef until it browns.
- Add the onions and spices and continue to fry until the onions soften.
- Add the tomatoes. Continue to stir until the tomatoes soften.
- Add water in the saucepan to a level where it covers the beef.
- Cover the saucepan and reduce the heat to medium. Let the beef boil until the water is depleted. By the time the water is depleted, the beef will be tender and fully cooked.
- Add the rice and hot water in the ratio of 1:2 (2 cups of water for every 1 cup of rice). Add salt to the water according to your taste.
- Immediately cover the saucepan and reduce the heat to low. Let the rice cook on low heat until the water is depleted.
- Once ready, stir the rice to evenly mix with the beef then serve and enjoy with your choice of side dishes.
