A number of nations around the world are currently going through a season of transition in leadership at various levels. There are campaigns being run by those who either want to take up or hold onto positions, as well as protests by those being led who are against the present leadership and desire change.
In this season, I would like to bring to our attention the Word of God in Romans 13.
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God [granted by His permission and sanction], and those which exist have been put in place by God.
Therefore one must be subject [to civil authorities], not only to escape the punishment [that comes with wrongdoing], but also as a matter of principle [knowing what is right before God]. For this same reason you pay taxes, for civil authorities are God’s servants, devoting themselves to governance. Pay to all what is due: tax to whom tax is due, customs to whom customs, respect to whom respect, honor to whom honor.
– Romans 13:1, 5-7 (Amplified Bible)
While we may have differing views on our leaders during the campaign season and after the elections, I encourage us to submit them to God. Let us pray for the prosperity of our nations and the world at large whilst honoring those God has allowed to lead us. Let us not join in on any discourse that dishonors our leaders.
Remember, if your leader is a born-again believer, the treasure of the Spirit of Christ is working in them to perfect them (2 Corinthians 4:7). If they are non-believing, still the heart of the king is in the hand of the Lord (Proverbs 21:1).
